"UGC" and "influencer marketing" are often used as if they were the same thing. They overlap, but they solve different problems, are priced differently, and need different things from you after the content is made.
The short answer
- Influencer marketing: you pay a creator to post about your product to their own audience. You are buying reach and trust.
- UGC (user-generated content): you pay a creator to make content for you to post on your channels or run as ads. You are buying content.
Side-by-side comparison
| Influencer marketing | UGC | |
|---|---|---|
| Where it's posted | The creator's account | Your account and your ads |
| What you pay for | Audience access and content | Content and the right to use it |
| Follower count matters? | Yes, along with engagement and audience fit | Hardly; content quality matters |
| Distribution | Included (their audience) | Your job, usually paid social |
| Usage rights | Often limited; extra for ads | Usually included for an agreed period |
| Best for | Awareness, launches, credibility | Ad creative, product pages, testing |
When to choose influencer marketing
Choose an influencer when the audience is the point:
- Launches and awareness. You want a lot of the right people to hear about something new.
- Credibility. A recommendation from someone the audience already trusts carries weight that an ad doesn't.
- Local reach. A creator with a mostly UAE audience reaches UAE customers without you building that audience yourself.
The key checks are audience location, engagement and fit. Our guide to spotting fake followers covers how to vet an account.
When to choose UGC
Choose UGC when you need content more than reach:
- Paid social creative. Ads made in a native, creator-style format often look less like ads, and you can test many versions.
- Product pages and marketplaces. Real-looking demos and reviews help shoppers decide.
- Volume. Brands running ads continuously need fresh creative every few weeks; UGC is a cost-effective way to supply it.
UGC only works if you have distribution. If you have no ad budget and a small following, a UGC video has nowhere to go.
Why the rights matter
The biggest practical difference is usage rights. When an influencer posts, you can usually share or repost it, but running it as a paid ad or using it on your website normally needs separate permission and a fee. With UGC, those rights are the product. Agree the channels and the duration in writing before production starts. Read more in influencer usage rights explained.
Using both together
The strongest campaigns often combine them:
- An influencer posts to their audience for reach and credibility.
- You license that content, or commission extra UGC from the same creator, for ads.
- You run the best-performing pieces as ads, through your account or the creator's (partnership ads).
What it costs in the UAE
