A big follower count tells you very little on its own. Followers can be bought, engagement can be inflated, and an audience can be in the wrong country for your campaign. These checks take about ten minutes per creator and catch most problems.

1. Read the comments, not just the count

Open the last 10 to 12 posts and read the comments.

  • Good signs: questions about the product, replies that mention details from the post, conversations between followers, the creator replying.
  • Red flags: lots of generic comments ("Nice!", "🔥🔥", "Love this") from accounts that look the same, comments unrelated to the post, or comments in languages that don't match the audience the creator claims.

2. Compare likes, comments and views

Work out a rough engagement rate: likes plus comments on recent posts, divided by followers. Then compare it with similar accounts in the same niche and size.

  • Very low engagement for the follower count can mean inactive or fake followers.
  • Very high likes with almost no comments can mean bought likes.
  • For video, compare views with followers. Healthy accounts show views in a reasonably consistent range from post to post.

3. Look at follower growth

Ask the creator for a growth screenshot, or use a social analytics tool. Steady growth, or jumps that line up with a viral post or press coverage, is normal. A sudden jump of thousands of followers with no explanation is a common sign of purchased followers.

4. Check where the audience is

For a UAE campaign you want a meaningful share of the audience in the UAE (or the GCC, if that is your market). Ask the creator for a recent screenshot of their audience location from Instagram or TikTok insights. Screenshots should be recent and show the account name.

5. Scan the follower list

Open the follower list and scroll for a minute. Lots of accounts with no profile picture, no posts, random-looking usernames, or that follow thousands of accounts but have few followers themselves, is a warning sign.

6. Review past brand work

  • Do sponsored posts get similar engagement to normal posts? A big drop can mean the audience doesn't respond to ads from this creator.
  • Do they disclose paid partnerships properly? Creators who skip disclosure create compliance risk for you.
  • Have they recently promoted your direct competitors?

7. Check fit and tone

Watch a few videos all the way through. Would you be comfortable with your brand next to this content? Is the creator's style right for your product? Fit matters as much as numbers.
